Survey Tip of the Week: Skin Treatments

The Quality of Care F-tag 684 is the third highest f-tag cited for annual surveys and second highest for complaint surveys in 2022. Failure to follow skin treatment orders is a common reason for the quality of care citation. Ohio citations from the most recent survey results include:  failure to perform wound dressing, not implementing changes according to the physician orders, failure to conduct skin assessments, not adequately reflecting the medication or treatment record with application of treatment, , absence of treatments for skin condition identified upon admission, and failure to change PICC line dressings as ordered. 

The Long-Term Care Survey Process (LTCSP) instructs surveyors to ask residents about any skin condition during the initial pool process and requires a record review for skin conditions for residents marked as non-interviewable, refused, unavailable or out of the facility.
